Forum › Forums › General Beckenham Discussions › Hello from another East Dulwich mover!
Hi Francesca, first of all welcome to the forum & thanks so much for posting!
We moved from East Dulwich 3 years ago and in that short time there are so many more independents opening up in the area. You definitely can’t complain about the lack of coffee shops in Beckenham & the restaurants are fantastic. To be fair we don’t have as many pubs as ED however the ones we have such s the Bricklayers & The Coach are very friendly have good music nights and the Chancery & The Elm tree do amazing roast at the weekend.
The Clock House area is lovely jut down the road you have the Alexandra, Goldsmith Arms the Bridge House. Can you tell we also like a good pint & night out!
There are lots of other good places, this was just the ones of the top of my head i could think of, anyone else on here have any other recommendations for these guys?
Beckenham is fab, we don’t think you’ll regret you’re move, we didn’t x
Hello
My husband and I are also considering making the move from Forest Hill/East Dulwich to Beckenham however are getting cold feet as we can’t seem to find the same independent coffee shop/pub vibe in BR3 as you do in SE22/SE23. Would love to be swayed otherwise….how have you all found Beckenham? We are considering the Clockhouse area (ie clockhouse road) for links to London Bridge. I know people have posted similar questions on this thread before but the last seems to have been a while ago so looking for an updated response 🙂
Hi suburbanite and welcome to the area and the forum. Beckenham certainly has a lot going for it, the parks are amazing and the extra space. Nice not to be cheak by jowl with the neighbours. Have you tried the Indian Street Food place Chai Nestro yet or the Jolly Woodman pub which has good ale and looks like it hasn’t changed since 1933. You’ve arrived just as our High St is having an 18month improvement, it’s going to be lovely when finished with broad pavements and cafe seating outside etc. Quite a transformation….and of course this awesome and growing forum 🙂
Come to the pop up market on Sunday, we’ll be there.
Nick
Hello folks!
wanted to say hi as my partner and I have just moved in from Sydenham / forest hill, and I have also lived in ED over the years too.
we moved for the same reason as everyone else and we are LOVING our garden
we also discovered beckenham place park just when we moved in too which is so beautiful – loving the cafe and yoga in the mansion and hoping more events might kick off there too
another pleasant surprise was the quality of local restaurants. We live at the elmers end end and the 2 Italians, Turkish cafe and Turkish restaurant and all brilliant and so friendly… We’re trying not to eat out every night at the moment and make the most of the fact there is also a waitrose! Haha
Anyway it was a bit of a surprise in the first few days how un-Londony it feels but soon got over that when we realised we had enough cupboard space to put all our stuff away with more room to spare. Plus a garage – brilliant.
looking forward to seeing all the great tips and ideas on this forum and getting to know the place a bit better
Hi Petal, Could it be Little Bay ?
if not ?
could it be one on this list?
There was also a pub supposed to be opening opposite Alexandra Nurseries- does anybody know if that is happening?
It’s been open for a while now, although since I don’t tend to go to pubs I haven’t been inside.
I can understand the council not wanting to grant any more licences in central Beckenham – historically, the pubs have been quite problematic in terms of antisocial behaviour and so on.
Hi all – also new to the forum but just wanted to reiterate the above praise for the Star & Garter. Not Beckenham obviously, but only a short bus ride away and it really is one of, if not the best craft beer pubs in all of London. We could really do with one of those in Beckenham instead of the litany of very average Mitchells and Butler pubs we currently have. It would make a huge difference, but the council are dead set against any more licenses it seems so it would need to replace an existing pub.
Hi everyone!
I feel like Beckenham has a great provision of places to grab a coffee and the restaurants are getting better all of the time, but I do wish the nightlife offering was better. There are some really fun places to drink near Chancery Lane – both The Chancery and the Jolly Woodman are nice, but when it comes to the High Street it’s not great. I do like Kelsey House, but I would LOVE an antic pub or something similar. There’s a revamped pub in Bromley called The Star & Garter however which has an INCREDIBLE selection of beer – it’s a nice building and the staff are great.
But yeah, it’s a shame the council won’t consider giving a license to a different type of pub/bar as I think there is a real demand for it.
Loved getting all of the Penge goss – this is such a great forum: thanks all.
Hi All,
I’m a newly registered member and another mover from ED! We moved a couple of years ago to the Eden Park area and absolutely love everything about Beckenham. Bigger garden, serinity, good transport links to name a few. As someone who relied heavily on EDF for recommendations and local news I am pleased to have stumbled upon the Beckenham Forum and this thread of former ED residents in Beckenham. I’m still scratching my head wondering how I did not find this forum all this while.
Just that it’ll be fine! I didn’t want to leave Se22 after 15 + years but like you a move to a semi with garden would have been well over a mill!
The main thing is you can still visit ED – local cab or Uber both £12 – so you are not banned from going there!
But I have done less than I thought… it’s nice here – better home living space, lovely parks/open spaces, great transport options (victoria or Charing x or Blackfriars) and a selection of restaurants with a real ‘up and coming’ area feel – it feels on the change as ED was a few years ago and having lots of like minded nice neighbours as well as ex ED bods also helps, obviously
It’s a change to get used to but you’ll be happy when you settle in and enjoy your new spacious abode!
Happy moving
Hey – newcomer here – we are yet another East Dulwich mover. We had a house sale fall through on Westwood Park and are now preparing ourselves mentally from leaving Underhill Road – just had an offer accepted on a lovely property (a garden with a house attached rings true)
My wife taking a big mental leap of faith as she never wanted to leave ED, but the same house would have cost us £1.3m in our neighbourhood and let’s just say I am pleased with the price….
Any guidance appreciated to soften the perceived blow!
Thanks. We will look out for the Alexandra opening, sounds lovely.
Agree on restaurants. I especially like Tapeo and Chai Naastro. Plus for coffee Fee and Brown is great (although would love them to open another branch nearer to the Clock House end of town…)
Another question for the forum. My husband has heard there is supposed to be a really nice restaurant in South Croydon somewhere. Not quite Michelin star (so not Chapter One) but that sort of level. Any ideas?
What?
Founded in October 2016, the Beckenham Forum is an online meeting place for the residents of Beckenham to share their knowledge and experiences of life in the area.
Who?
The Beckenham Forum is not a faceless franchise based in California, we are a local couple living in Village Way, Beckenham.
Why?
We created the forum because we believe that being part of a community makes living somewhere much more enjoyable. An online community is something you can use where and when you want to.
