Thanks Nick for the removal of the rubbish painters number.
I haven’t seen the feisty robin in some days I expect he has become hawk or cat food
I have blackbirds, great tits and blue tits in the garden as regular visitors, but the other day there were four Jays in the tree at the bottom of the garden and a couple of magpies keep dropping in, it seems there are more predators than prey these days.
dickensman thanks for the painter recommendation that will be useful in the future
Its pretty cold in the garden at the moment, the frost has taken it’s toll with many of my plants, hoping they’re surviving under the dead leaves.
I’ve had Squirrels dominating the garden recently, hanging by their back legs to eat seed out of the hanging bird feeder. I lengthened the cable to make it half a meter below the tree but they soon learned how to ‘skydive’ on to the feeder and catch on to it. They sit with their back legs and tail hanging out and eat themselves silly then fall ungainly onto the ground below.
I was given and nest box and feeder for xmas so need to find good spots for them.
Apart from that, only bluets, pigeons and magpies in the garden this week.
Having decided the front of the house looks run down I thought I would have it painted before Christmas which means the scaffold would have to be erected in the front garden explained the painter.
My heart sank as I hoped it would be done off a ladder, being careful with my hard earned as usual I said "just do the ground floor".
The painter quickly said it would cost £250 which cheered me up as I expected it to be a grand or twelve hundred knowing that scaffold is not cheap so here is the number :- 07479 514 472 JDS Scaffold. ask for Joe. joe.desilva@aol.co.uk
The first painter who arrived quoted £3200
the painter I am using has quoted £900
both were recommended on the same forum by alleged happy customers.
I shall forward the painters phone number and a picture or two I am satisfied with the quality of their workmanship.
The hard frosty weather brings birds from far away.
The only time I see long-tailed tits is in this type of harsh weather.
A few wood pigeons have been visiting recently, trying their luck by pecking under the peanut holders.
The feisty robin cannot argue as the pigeons are several times his weight.
I had to drive the magpie away a couple of times today, after I had put some scraps of bacon fat out for the robin and great tits.
Some good tips
I have just built a large holder for leaves to make leaf mould, it’s created differently to compost so needs it’s own spot.
I have another holder for all the sticks and bamboo that I shred, this ends up as mulch .
And of course two free composters, in some areas you just have to pay for delivery > http://www.getcomposting.com
The last two years I have been growing the giant Chilean Rhubarb plant Gunnera, it’s getting quite big now my leaves are half a meter across. This is a critical time of year for it though as you have to cover the hearts of the plant before to first frost.
I’m watching the forecasts.
This is my partner Alice sitting under the huge Gunnera at the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall, when I saw these, I had to have a go at growing them, I bought three and so far all are alive. I’ve had to irrigate them on a timer as they like to have wet roots. If all three grow as big as this I’ll be in right trouble
Everywhere is looking far more wintry with the visit of hurricane Angus, I now have no leaves left on the trees.
When the trees release their leaves and fall to the ground they cover it to prevent any other potential threat from
new growths as their leaves are full of toxins.
Happily those same leaves when composted and rotted down they become useful fertilizer,
but they have to go through the rotting process before they become useful.
If you are on a water meter you might save some urine for the compost heap this helps the rotting and also gives desperately needed nitrogen which the heap needs to assist in the rotting process.
This helps the water meter owners because they do not flush, thus saving a couple of gallons each time going through the meter. Happy days.
The photos I was hoping to put on this thread will have to wait another couple of weeks until my daughter gets her act together I should be able to do it myself from then on, well that’s the theory anyway.
I want to get pictures during the day not at night using the flash facility as she suggested
I have to get pictures of the goldfish in the stainless steel water tank they swim around in.
They were the size of a finger nail when first put in to eat the larvae of mosquito’s, but now they are about six inches long if you include a long flowing tail.
I have two rainwater tanks one beneath each of the shed down pipes.
They are about two metres long and four feet deep but only 21 inches wide as that was the maximum width to get down the side entrance.
I had them made before I went on to a water meter my water charges then were £750.00 pa now the costs via the meter was £89.00
I could not believe the difference just in the first year, even with purchasing the two tanks I was quids in, and also its on going.
Hooray and happy days!
The company who made them: MJR fabrications 01707 646 825 ask for Danny or Martin.
They can cut, bend, weld, and will deliver for a fee.
